Students in Grade 6, 7 and 8 are learning how to play instruments as part of the Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre’s Music Camp hosted at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. During the four-day camp, students are learning about music theory, music history and performing. The students are also introduced to the basics of band, including woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments.

“Students are experimenting with composition and deconstructing the various elements of music, while also developing key skills in problem solving, spatial reasoning, and music literacy,” said Mr. Azavedo, Teacher.

For two students, Johann and Alexandria this is the first time playing an instrument. “I’m learning more about music and how to play the clarinet,” said Alexandria. While for others, it is an opportunity to practice and improve their skills.

Mr. Azavedo added, “Music is a universal language. So by participating in band, students are developing self-awareness, self-confidence and a sense of well-being.”
